Interlake Employment Services

Inside This Issue:

Did You Know?

  • Interlake Employment Services participants earned over $84,000 in 1998.

  • In 1999 that number more than doubled to $192,000.

  • For an average Food Chain restaurant the turnover rate is 10 days! That's about $8500 per position!!

  • The Canadian Taxpayers spend over $43 Billion annually on supporting people once thought to be unemployable.
Manitoba Business Leadership Network

The Manitoba Business Leadership Network supports the business community in understanding the benefits of hiring people who have been identified as having a disability.

The current Government spends over 43 Billion dollars annually on financial supports for those who were once deemed to be unemployable.

Interlake Employment Services participants in 1998 earned over $84,000, in 1999 that number more than doubled to $192,000. That is money that did not come from the public coffers. People who receive assistance and who are employed recognize less that 30% of their earnings after deduction and incentive programs take their cut.

This does not dispute the fact that people who are recognized as having a disability have a higher expendable income than youths in Canada today.

Contributing to the economy, the community and to society is a vital role we all play throughout the course of our lives. People with disabilities are people first. Recognize their gifts and attributes for what they are and what they can do for you.

No one is asking for a hand out, just the opportunity to prove they can do the job.

If you would like more information on hiring people with disabilities contact the Manitoba Business Leadership Network at: 204-948-0105.

Ashern, A Place To Call Home

Ashern is situated on HWY 6 two hours north of Winnipeg. It has become the trade Centre for the North-west Interlake.

Although the town's population is about 800 it boasts three motels/hotels, six restaurants, three grocery stores, two financial institutions and most other businesses you would expect to find in a much larger community. Ashern is also fortunate to be services by three doctors working form one hospital a fully staffed RCMP detachment and satellite offices for major utilities.

Super Six Community Development Corporation is centered in Ashern which may account for the high number of home based businesses in the area.

The Business Service Centre is located at the Super Six office in Ashern and is staffed with knowledgeable, competent and professional people who are part of Ashern's community. I recommend anyone seeking information on business stop by and talk to Jim Park. If he doesn't have and answer to your question he'll get it!

Arborg Shines in Employment Supports

Ripples of the Icelandic River can be seen from any point in the quaint little town of Arborg Manitoba. Though predominantly Icelandic, many nationalities have settled in this north east Interlake community.

Interlake Employment Services would like to take this opportunity to recognize a great supporter and equal opportunity employer in Arborg...

Gilbert International has given experience and employment to many people throughout the years. They are always willing to try successful or not. They've certainly had their bad times, however they maintain fair practices in re-hiring when there is work to be done. They are accommodating and patient and to me that is what makes a great business.

Gimli, Then and Now

The Town of Gimli is unique. The long weekend in August finds the community celebrating everything Icelandic. If you are a Viking wanna-be, don't miss this exciting time of the year.

If you can pronounce Islendingadagurinn without hesitating, you must be a Gimli resident, or at least have an Icelandic background. If you know the difference between Ponnukokur and Vinarterta and love drinking coffee made in a sock you are in the right place.

Gimli is a progressive and growing community. People from all over the world stop in Gimli to spend time shopping, sailing, fishing, seeing the local sights or just visiting with the friendly people.

Gimli is a delightful place to visit any time of the year. The reputation for Gimli has been established as a four-season destination. Fishing, kayaking, sailing, bird-watching, and miles of bike and hiking paths. The winter attracts snowmobilers, ice fisherman and windsurfers. There are also many fine boutiques and restaurants.

The Gimli Chamber of Commerce is one of the most active and progressive Chambers in the Province of Manitoba. They are welcoming to new-comers and provide support and help in many ways. Their membership is steadily increasing. Everyone wants to get on the "band wagon". Gimli has been very supportive of our organization and the employers "bend-over backwards" to assist us in our needs. Don't miss an opportunity to visit this pretty, friendly, town.

Lundar Is A Great Little Town

Lundar is a great little town. It is situated in the Interlake on the west shore of Lake Manitoba about 100 km north of Winnipeg on HWY 6. The population is between 600-700. The population is a great cross-section representing true Canadian culture.

The main industry in Lundar is agriculture, mainly beef production. Feedlots, graineries and PMU Production farms dot the landscape as you travel up the busiest HWY in the Province on your way to Lundar.

The largest employer in the area is Sigfusson's Northern a large construction company that provides quality contracting to areas across Manitoba and Ontario. They currently employ well over 100 employees.

Sigfusson's has been a supporter of Interlake Employment Services for a number of years and deserves to be recognized as our choice for employer of the year! Special thanks goes out to them as they support people first.

The Canada Goose is the symbol for Lundar.

Call Karen Lindal at 204-762-5489 for all your employment needs.

Stonewall: Fond Farewell... Welcome, Welcome

I would like to congratulate a family operated business that has been in business for a number of years in the Stonewall community. Recently, these families sold their hotel, restaurant and motel business to a young family from the Notre Dame area. If you haven't guessed who I'm speaking of yet, it's the Dandeneau families. Roland and Ed have been in our community raising their young families.

Now that their children have almost grown, they have decided to work at other interests. Over the years, they have been very supportive of Interlake Employment Services. Together, we have worked through minor incidents that come up on an occasional basis. I found working with them a real pleasure. They were always quite accommodating and would always share their knowledge of the restaurant business that needed to be passed on to our consumers in order for them to succeed at their job.

Our clients were fortunate enough to secure a number of jobs under Ed and Roland's supervision which were long lasting. These turned out to be very complimentary. Our consumers are very punctual, rarely take sick time, and are usually flexible with their hours, and are very dependable. The two brothers realized these facts and used this to their advantage. In the same sense, they were supportive of peoples with a disability and encouraged them to participate in the work force.

It seems the new owners are relatively the same sort of mind. At this time, I would like to welcome Sherry and Bruno Labossiere to the community and good luck in their new endeavors. I am looking forward to having the same relationship with them as with the past owners.

For more information on employment in the Stonewall area call Lori Vandal at Interlake Employment Services 467-2061
